Week Three - Diamond Spell - 1989

Our kids were always singing while Joy and I were creating music at home - a busy, busy time raising three kids, bills to pay and trying to keep our music alive.
This video has my beautiful partner, Joy with Emerson, Katherine, Caroline, and their friend Kim Wilson singing along. It’s a kid’s song - a bit silly but lots of fun.
Mel Kay played bass and I played guitar. We recorded it at Mel’s studio and video was created at Bowmanville Town hall (now known as Clarington Town Hall) on a quiet Sunday. It has lost some quality with all the bouncing to different media types over the years.
I love Katherine’s heartfelt laugh at the end of this song and notice Emerson disappears when he spied one of the staff walk in with donuts. /FB

DIAMOND SPELL

Who put the kitty down that well
Was it Katherine with her Diamond Spell
Who pulled him out - I don’t recall
They’re just children of God and that’s all
And they sing….

La la la…..

It’s a covered day and the rain does fall
And my baby smiles with such love
Carolina turns to me and says
“It’s only nature Mama, have a beautiful day”
Skips away

La la la…..

Now where does it go I cannot see
Somebody bottle it sell it to me
I wanna see beauty and kindness free
Papa I just wish on star - and it’s there for me
And they sing

La la la…..   Katherine’s laugh.

This is from my third poetry collection, Horizon - written in homage for the war hero Krysta Skarbek a.k.a. Christine Granville.

IF THERE’S ENOUGH TIME

In the morning, if there’s enough time
I’ll leave all boundaries behind
Wash the plume of night from my eyes
And cross the fields of war and clover
There will be no need for prayer
For my road is unforgiving
I’ll breathe until God’s generosity is lost.

In the evening, if there’s enough time
I’ll count the stars in the vaulted heavens
Light a fire and dream of loved ones
Lay my tired boots near the glowing embers
And rest were sleep is forever lost.
